Before this week’s AT&T Byron Nelson tournament in Texas and eight days before golf's second major of the season - the PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y. - the nation will celebrate National Golf Day (NGD) this Wednesday.
NGD is intended to be a celebration of the sport’s emotional, social, physical and environmental benefits, along with ing that the sport is for everyone. With the excitement around golf over the past year (due, in large part, to PGA vs. LIV), PennStakes.com – your source for PA sportsbooks - decided to look at which states across the United States are the most interested in the PGA Tour.
PennStakes.com utilized three data points to develop the ranking of the 50 states from most to least interested in the PGA Tour. We utilized World Population Review’s ranking of “Golf Courses Per Capita,” Google Trend’s search interest of the “PGA Tour” over past 12 months and extra points for the states with the most Top 30-ranked PGA events, based on Stadium Talk.
States That Love Golf and PGA Tour Most
Here are some results you won’t find even on the most detailed PA sports betting apps. How did Pennsylvania do?
Keystone State Comes Out No. 6 Nationally
Pennsylvania finished in sixth place with a point total of 109. The state has 42 golf courses per square mile, garnered a 28 among PGA Tour Search Interest and posted a 39 for Top PGA Events.
Neighbors Ohio and New York placed third and ninth, respectively. Florida finished atop the rankings.
There are no PGA, Champions, LPGA or Korn Ferry Tour tournaments being held in the state in 2023, which is unusual, but the 107th Open (State) Championship Presented by DICKs Sporting Goods will be held at Country Club of York in York on Aug. 14-16.
In 2024, Pennsylvania will host three USGA events:
- U.S. Amateur Four-Ball (May 25-29) at Philadelphia Cricket Club (Wissahickon, Militia Hill Courses)
- U.S. Women's Open (May 30-June 2) at Lancaster Country Club
- U.S. Senior Women's Open (Aug 1-4) at Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh.
